“CONNECTIONS” FOR
THOSE BITTEN BY THE “COPPER COIN COLLECTING BUG”
WINTER ,
2011
JOHN
DIRNBAUER
I have enjoyed the wonderful hobby of coin and
numismatic book collecting for well over 50 years. As with most
pursuits, the longer that one is involved, the more that one learns and
this, in turn, leads to greater enjoyment. The following organizations
have allowed me to increase my knowledge, meet new and interesting
people, and sharpen the skills necessary to make good numismatic
decisions. You may wish to do the same by considering memberships in
one or more of the following specialized clubs.
EARLY
AMERICAN COPPERS, INC, known as EAC: contact Rod
Burress, 9743 Leacrest, Cincinnati, OH 45215 to join the club. Dues are
$25.00 per year and include the interesting and informative newsletter,
Penny-Wise, and membership in an on-line chat room that deals with
large cents, half cents, and matters related to early American copper
coins dated 1793-1857. Penny-Wise has been published every two months
since September 1967 with 50-60 pages per issue.
EAC holds an outstanding annual convention and
auction that has become a not-to-miss event. The EAC convention moves
about the country on a yearly basis and is usually held in the month of
April. Aficionados of the humble coins of our country’s early days will
most certainly enjoy participation in this organization. EAC boasts a
membership of about 500.
COLONIAL
COIN COLLECTORS CLUB, known as C4: contact Charlie
Rohrer, P.O. Box 25, Mountville, PA 17554 or by email at rohrer@cadmus.com
to join the club. Dues are $25.00 per year and include the chatty and
entertaining C4 newsletter and membership in a colonial coin chat room.
The newsletter is published three times per year with 50+ pages per
issue.
An important benefit of C4 membership is the annual
convention and auction held in Boston each November as part of the
long-standing Bay State Coin Show. This event is a gathering of the
(very enthusiastic) faithful and a terrific get-together for colonial
coin collectors. This club was founded in 1993 and has a membership of
almost 600.
NUMISMATIC BIBLIOMANIA SOCIETY,
known as NBS: contact David Sundman, P.O. Box 82,
Littleton, NH 03561 or by email at dsundman@littletoncoin.com
to join the society. Dues are $15.00 per year and include the quarterly
journal, The Asylum, and membership in an on-line chat room that
explores numismatic literature – books, auction catalogs, and related
ephemera.
NBS
was founded in 1982 and has a world-wide membership in excess of 1200.
NBS has informal meetings at various coin shows around the country and
provides opportunity to meet the authors of numismatic books.
THE COLONIAL NEWSLETTER: contact Megan Fenselau at the
American Numismatic Society (ANS), 212-571-4470 ext
117, to subscribe. The cost is $50.00 per year for three issues of 50+
pages per issue. The subscription cost is reduced to $35.00 per year
for those who are members of the ANS.
The
Colonial Newsletter has been continuously published for 50 years. Well
over 3200 pages of colonial research, reports of discoveries, book
reviews, conversations with collectors, reviews of museum exhibits, and
many other perspectives on pre-Federal numismatica are recounted.
The Spring issue of NUMISMATIC
COMMENTARY will be published on this website in April 2011.
