A FEW WORDS ON GRADING EARLY AMERICAN COPPER COINS

Early American copper (EAC) coins require specialized grading. “Copper Quotes by Robinson” (various editions) explains this concept in a straightforward manner. The secret to understanding the concept and, thus, learning how to properly grade copper coins is to look at as many copper coins as you possibly can. This takes time, but the effort is well worth it in both psychic gratification and in $$$.

EAC grading is comprised of a sharpness grade, a net grade, and a description of the condition of a particular coin.

• The sharpness grade indicates the amount of wear on the coin.
• The net grade reflects any problems with the coin and an explanation of those problems.
• The condition of the coin is shown as follows:

Scudzy

Middle of the road coin

The above, plus one additional factor, leads to the price of a colonial coin, a half cent, or a large copper cent. That factor is the rarity of the piece. The rarity scale reflects the most current information available from “Copper Quotes by Robinson.” The rarity assigned to each variety is subject to change as new pieces are found and attributed.
