APPRAISAL
SERVICES
Appraisal of
numismatic properties is offered for individual collectors, museums,
banks, and attorneys providing services in the areas of wills, trusts,
estate planning, and probate. Collections of coins, medals, exonumia
and numismatic literature are in many cases life-long and personally
gratifying pursuits for their owners. At certain points in time,
realistic and accurate appraisals of such collections are necessary.
I am prepared to provide verbal and/or written appraisals in a timely
and cost-effective manner.
I am a third-generation
numismatist with over 50 years experience in buying, selling, and
trading all denominations of United States coinage from 17th century
pre-Federal colonial coinage through modern day issues of the United
States Mint. I am conversant in all denominations and metallic compositions;
half cents through double eagles; copper, silver, gold and platinum.
I am in touch with the ever-changing coin and bullion markets. I
have an in-depth, working knowledge of collector-grade coins through
investment-quality certified coins.
I am also prepared
to consult on the donation or sale of coin collections and related
literature. I have a vast network of connections through my long-standing
memberships in the leading numismatic organizations and societies.
Depending on the size and scope of a collection, I can broker a
private treaty sale or arrange for public auction on a local or
national scale. I have had personal and successful experience with
all of the major numismatic auction houses in this country.
I point out
that no two collections are the same because no two collectors had
the same goals in mind as they pursued their treasures. I offer
personalized, caring appraisal services with attention to the nuances
and details.

is a letter of reference from clients who realized $900,000 for their
coins. This letter tells their story and speaks to their respect for
John Dirnbauer Rare Coins. November 18, 2010
To Whom It May Concern:
This is a letter of reference, and appreciation, for John Dirnbauer of John Dirnbauer Rare Coins, Thomaston, Maine.
We
were the owners of the “Johnson-Blue $10 Gold Eagle Collection” that
was sold by Stack’s Rarities, LLC in Boston, MA on August 8, 2010 as
part of the American Numismatic Association’s World’s Fair of Money.
The collection was the feature consignment of and showcased on the
cover of the Stack’s catalog. My wife and I (we wish to remain anonymous) inherited
a world class $10 dollar gold eagle collection. We are not “coin
people,” but we knew that we had acquired a significant asset, and we
needed to find the best possible expert to work with us.
We
can say without hesitation or reservation that we did find the best
possible expert to assist us when we contracted with John Dirnbauer.
From
the very beginning, John managed our coins with the utmost
professionalism, confidentiality and security. John conducted extensive
research on our behalf and provided what turned out to be “spot on”
appraisals of our assets. We relied on John’s vast knowledge as an
accomplished numismatist, as well as his extensive experience and
connections in the coin auction world, to help us interview and select
the best auction house for our collection. The auction was very
successful and exceeded our expectations.
In
addition to John’s extensive knowledge and professionalism, it was his
personal touch that really helped us understand our asset and fully
appreciate all of the options available to us. John was completely
objective in his approach and always patiently allowed us to direct the
process (under his watchful eye, of course.)
In
summary, we give John Dirnbauer our highest recommendation. If
knowledge, professionalism, security and confidentiality are important
to you, we think that you couldn’t find a more qualified numismatist and
asset manager than John Dirnbauer. (signed) The former owners of the “Johnson-Blue Collection”
